Parts of this year's carnival had a distinctly Olympic flavour, with just a year to go until London hosts the Games.

The carnival has been an annual fixture on August Bank Holiday since 1966, bringing a party atmosphere to London's streets. One carnival-goer said: "It's absolutely fantastic, I love Carnival. Bring on 2012."

More than 6,500 police officers were on the streets, and festivities drew to a close 90 minutes earlier than last year in an effort to prevent trouble just weeks after rioting spread across London. Police said this year's event had passed peacefully.

UCLA Jazz Festival 2011

[img src=http://talawahjournals.com/wp-content/flagallery/ucla-jazz-festival-2011/thumbs/thumbs_tanya-stephens-223.jpg]Tanya Stephens
The very sultry and sexy, Tanya Stephens, had the crowd winding to her charming dancehall style. She loves to interact with the audience, especially addressing the guys, telling them how much women appreciate them. Some of her most popular songs performed were: “These Streets” and “It’s A Pity”.
[img src=http://talawahjournals.com/wp-content/flagallery/ucla-jazz-festival-2011/thumbs/thumbs_wailing-souls-30.jpg]Wailing Soul
First up on my agenda was The Wailings Souls, a veteran reggae band that has had multiple reggae Grammy nominations. The opened with their rocking reggae hit “She Pleases Me”. They performed such classics as “Old Broom” and “Picky Picky Head”. They had the massive sold out crowd on their feet dancing right from the start. You may remember the movie “Cool Runnings”, The Jamaica bobsled team, inspiring story, of the team’s resilience at the winter Olympics, staring John Candy and Leon. The soundtrack was almost entirely done by The Wailing Soul.
[img src=http://talawahjournals.com/wp-content/flagallery/ucla-jazz-festival-2011/thumbs/thumbs_steel-pulse-796.jpg]Steel Pulse
Headliner and Grammy winner, Steel Pulse took to the stage opening with “Find It… Quick”. The UK’s finest reggae artists performed flawlessly and always have fantastic stage presence. Lead singer and main creative force within the band, David Hinds, flashed his hip-length locks and belted out the lyrics to his many hit songs, including…”Chant A Psalm”, “Blues Dance Raid” and “Stepping Out”. I was able to get backstage at the end of the day to chat with some of the members of Steel Pulse and give out some photos. BIG UP Steel Pulse, you have been close to my heart for many years.
[img src=http://talawahjournals.com/wp-content/flagallery/ucla-jazz-festival-2011/thumbs/thumbs_gyptian-424.jpg]Gyptian
Ripe and ready, it was time for all the ladie’s fantasies come true, Gyptian! Center stage, his smile, simply brought those ladies rushing, front stage close and personal, all screaming on approach. He opened his show with “Nah Let Go” as the girls, , sang along to every word not missing a word or note. Some of the other mega hits he performed were “Hold You” and “Beautiful Lady. The girls swooned as he pranced across the stage, sometimes flashing his locks. He gave an outstanding performance! He woooed them, and the ladies, certainly reciprocated.

With the mass exodus from Haiti, Martinique and Guadeloupe to Trinidad, the steelpan evolved from a communication device to the musical instrument it is used as today. Drumming was used as a form of communication among the enslaved Africans and was subsequently outlawed by the British colonial government in 1783.[2] African slaves also performed during Mardi Gras celebrations, joining the French that had brought the tradition to the island.
